01July market pulse

Broad headline prices held close to June, while a like-for-like view showed mild softening beneath the change in vehicle mix.

Typical cut RM 3,000

The unadjusted median rose 0.3% because July contained a relatively richer late-model and premium mix. Holding model, year, and specification comparable produced the cleaner −0.9% movement signal.

02Price architecture and buyer budgets

The market retained a broad accessible base: 43.4% of observed cars were below RM 50,000 and 66.1% were below RM 100,000.

Percentiles describe the July asking-price distribution, not the value of an individual car.

Premium and luxury vehicles represented roughly one third of observed supply. That richer mix is why the headline median should not be used alone to infer month-to-month price direction.

03Brands and high-liquidity models

Toyota represented about one in five observed cars, while national and Japanese brands supplied much of the high-liquidity core.

High listing depth creates stronger comparison sets, but the exact year, variant, mileage, and condition still control vehicle-level value.

04Seller repricing and inventory movement

Most matched sellers held their asking price. Reductions were targeted rather than market-wide, and their frequency varied sharply by model.

A price reduction is a change in the advertised ask; it is not proof of a completed sale or seller motivation.

Inventory share grew most strongly among models including the BMW Z4, Kia Sportage, Kia Picanto, and BMW 528i. It contracted among models including the Volvo XC90, Ford Ranger, Toyota Supra, and Mazda MX-5. These are supply signals, not sales-volume measures.

05Regional and vehicle mix

Known-location supply clustered around Klang Valley, while known vehicle attributes showed SUVs approaching sedans in share and petrol remaining dominant.

06Age, mileage, and depreciation signals

Age separated prices strongly, but the wide spread inside every age band shows why badge, variant, mileage, history, and condition still matter.

07From the market to a specific car

Use the market report to narrow the field, then value and inspect the exact vehicle before negotiating.

July reference bands summarise common model cohorts; they are not quotes for every vehicle carrying the same badge.

A practical buyer sequence

  • Set an all-in budget that includes transfer, insurance, initial maintenance, and a repair reserve.
  • Build a comparison set matching model, year, variant, mileage, and region.
  • Run a vehicle-specific valuation rather than applying a category median to the car.
  • Inspect identity, history, tyres, electronics, and mechanical condition independently.
  • Negotiate the evidence-backed condition and maintenance gap—not only the advertised discount.

Frequently asked questions

Does the RM 60,000 median mean a typical used car is worth RM 60,000?

No. It is the median asking price across the July observation set. The mix includes different models, ages, specifications, mileage, condition, and regions, so it is not a valuation for an individual car.

Does the 0.9% decline describe completed sale prices?

No. It describes movement in a comparable basket of asking listings between June and July. Final negotiated prices and completed transactions are not observed in this report.

Why is the headline median up while the comparable basket is down?

July contained a relatively richer mix of late-model and premium vehicles. That lifted the overall median, while matched model-year-specification cohorts showed modest underlying softness.

Can I use the model value bands as an offer price?

Use them only as orientation. The exact variant, age, mileage, condition, service history, accident or flood evidence, ownership costs, and local comparables should be checked first.
